Representation of Gender in Doctor Who

Mise-en scene

During this shot of doctor who, the mise-en scene is very futuristic and science based, this represents gender because the majority of the time, males are interested in science and futuristics and also it shows that they are successful because they have an empire and this also links to males wanting to look important. 

This shot shows a women with a very innocent look on her face, this links to gender because it shows that she is less important and also the image of the guards behind her shows that they are in charge of her, this links to the common thought that men are in charge of women. The guards are also in uniforms, this makes them more important and superior to her because they have a role and they are also holding guns showing that they have power. The women appears to be wearing some sort of uniform, she is in all black leather type material and she suggests that she has some importance. This is relevant because although she is important, there are people of a higher importance than her.

Again this shots shows the guards in uniforms holding a gun which shows their importance and superiority. The women are also in uniforms however we know that these uniforms are uniform of maids so this makes them look inferior because we know that they do not have a lot of wealth and are a  lower class than others in the clip. The man is also wearing overalls showing that he is of a lower class and less wealthy. 

This shot shows another guards however the guards gun is out of view within this shot but it also shows another man with dirt on his face. the guard is wearing a uniform and also has a very stern look with expresses the guards superiority and because the other man have a dirty face, this has connotations that he is inferior and the fact that he is also being guarded shows that he is not as important. 

This shot shows a man standing at the top of some stars, he has a very cynical look on his face and this is because he is of a higher importance than the women who is standing below him. The use of him standing on the top of the stairs also emphasises that he is higher up in the ranks than she is. this shot also shows a pretty women in a red dress, she is shown as a possession of the man by the way she stands very close to him and also how she does not speak. This shows that the man is in charge of the pretty woman and may also have connotations that she does what he asks. 

This shot shows a shrivelled up creature in a cage. Because this creature is in the age we gather than someone is superior to him and has locked him up in a cage. From what has happened so far in the film, we assume the person who has put him in here is the man at the top of the stairs. 

This shot shows the power of gender because as the man with a lower class steps forward the guard nudges him with his gun and the man stops still with a disappointed look on his face. this shows power because as soon as the guard warns the man he stops moving. 

This shot shows the man and the women slightly behind him, this shot emphasises the possession comment I made earlier because you can see very clearly that she is dressed up in a red dress, this shows that she has to dress to impress and you can tell her wealth by this because she can afford a very pretty dress like this and by the material you can tell she is reasonably wealthy as silk can be very expensive. She is also looking at him as if she is admiring him. 

This shows a very science related scene, there is a touchscreen monitor and this relates to gender because commonly you base science with males. it also shows his importance because he is in charge of expensive equipment. 

This shows a computer generated image of some rockets, these are important because the man we assume has the power asks something and then it switches to this shot and a voice answers the mans question, therefore backing up my point about how he is in charge and he is also very important. 

This shot shows the main figure of authority holding a weapon, he is pointing it at the woman also emphasising that he has all the power and that she is week. 

This is a very wide-angled establishing shot, this shot shows us everyone in the room, it shows that the man has the highest importance because he is in the centre of this shot, he is also the only person completing an action whereas all the other people in this shot are standing still. It also shows that there are four other men standing on the top balcony in suits, standing very formally, this shows that they are important because they are standing higher up that all the other people. It also shows two women dressed smartly on the balcony swell which shows they are of importance however they are standing either side of the man which may mean that he has authority over them. The ceiling in the top of the image is also very futuristic which may link to the males being more interested in science and also the importance of this room. There is also a large silver globe next to the stairs, this may be significant because it might show that this room does something to do with the earth. 

This shot shows the women surrounded by people listening to her talk, this shot shows that she has a higher importance than these people because they are all listening to her. The candles and lamps in this image also show that these people are a low class and maybe quite poor. This shot shows low key lighting, this makes the shot looks mysterious and may also link to the use of the flashback. She is also in a slightly brighter lighting than others in the shot, this would show gender because she is brighter, the focal point and more important than all the others in the clip. 

This shows the cage beginning to glow, this shows that the creature inside of it is gaining power. 

This shows a screen with lots of people on it, this gives us reason to believe that this important room is maybe watching people. this shows gender because whoever is in charge of this business must be very important and superior. 

This shows the creature beginning to transform, he is getting bigger and transforming into a human being. The use of the blue special effects also show that he is gaining power and importance. 

He is now a human figure which shows he is important because magic has transformed him into a human. he is also rising up using the blue special effect. This shows his power because he is magical and he is now becoming higher up in importance than the man we previously thought was the most important. 

Camera work

The opening shot shows the man in the foreground and the women in the background entering the room, the women is out of focus, this shows us that he is more important than she is and we should focus on him. 

This shot is a low angled shot, it shows us that he is higher up than everyone else.

This shot is a medium shot of the women, she is walking alone and she also looks very innocent and unaware of what is going on. 

Again this shot shows that the man is higher up and therefore more important

 This is and action shot because the man has asked her to complete and action and she is doing as he has asked.

This shot is taken from the womens point of view and is also an action shot showing us that he has asked her to give him something and she has done as he asked. 

 This shot focuses on the women but the maids and other man is behind her, this shows that she has a higher status than they do.

 This shot is a medium close up, it shows us how the women is looking up at the man, this shows his importance and how she has to look up to him.

 This is a close up of the women's face, also showing how she has to look up to him and he is of more importance than she is. This is a high angled shot, it is used to show that he is higher up than her and this also makes her look very vulnerable.

This shot is showing us the man and the ticking clock, this is so that you know he is in charge of the clock and the clock is in focus in the shot so you look at that and know that this is what is happening, it also creates tension.

The close-up of the clock also emphasises my previous point.

 This shot is taken at a high angle to show the innocence and vulnerability of this creature and how there are people above him and more important than him.

This wide-angled establishing shot shows us the entire scene, this helps us to realise the importance of what is going on because of how modern and futuristic the scene looks, it also helps us to see the ranks of people.

 This shot is very busy and shows all the people crowding around the women, this shows us that she is more important as she is the centre of the shot and other people in the shot are looking at her.

 This close up of the mans lips emphasises creates tension and also shows gender because he is giving her advice.

 These two close-ups are reaction shots. They show that he is suddenly realising he is not as important as he thought. This shows gender because he knows that he is no longer the most important.

This shot is a high angled shot, it is used to show tat the doctor is rising up, it shows where he previously was and then tilts up to show how high up he is. This shows gender because as he rises he gains importance and becomes the most powerful figure. 

 These two shots show us that the doctor is now higher and more important than the person this shows us that he is now superior.

This shot is a medium close up, it shows us the mans facial expression and also you can see his hands are above his head and this makes him look intimidated, this shows that he is now aware that the doctor is superior over him and he is now weaker and does not have the authority. This shows gender very well because initially he has the most power and authority and now he is becoming weaker and the doctor now has the authority.

In this long shot you can see that the doctor is now higher up than the man who was previously powerful, in this you can also see that the women in the red dress is facing her husband and she looks scared so maybe she even realises that he is losing his power and effectively so is she. This shows gender because she is like his possession and if he loses the power, she does to.

This shot was taken at a high angle to the rest of the scene however it is in line with the doctor as he has rose up, this represents gender because the is above everyone else and he has the authority and power.

In this medium close up he is getting lower and more inferior, this is done by the use of a high angled shot, this makes the person look vulnerable and because he was previously higher up than the other characters and now the use of a high angled shot on him shows that he is gradually becoming more and more vulnerable and losing power.

Sound

The music that is playing in the opening of the clip is very intense. If you was to listen to this you would think a battle was about to commence because it is slightly western and gives the image that something is about to happen, this shows gender because it makes us think that the main character has power and he is important. As he starts to speak the music fades out however it is playing quietly in the background, this shows that he has power because when he is speaking, the attention is on him however the music still playing implies that he is still powerful. The tone in which he is speaking is also very high and mighty to show that he has power. His voice is also very condescending, this is done so that he has tone power and is also superior over the women. When the women begins to laugh the tone of his voice begins to lower and he becomes more solemn, he also speaks in a way that shows he is threatened and maybe trying to regain his power and authority however he does not want to seem threatened, he still wants to come across and the master and most powerful. Gradually the women's voice begins to raise as her speech becomes more triumphant and the man is becoming more intimidated. She reaches a point where she is virtually shouting and this is when the man sits down on the stairs, this would show that he has realised she is making a valid point and this will make him look weak. The volume of the music begins to rise again and this shows that the women is becoming gradually more triumphant and the power is shifting. She finishes her monologue and at the very end says "doctor", after she has said this everyone begins to repeat the word doctor in a very hopeful/triumphant way and there is then a very electronic sound as the cage that the creature is in begins to glow. The man then starts to shout "no, no, no" however the tone of his voice shows that he is intimidated and feels vulnerable.  At this point the music is very loud and effectively shows that the power is shifting. Finally at the end of the clip the volume of everything has risen, including the electrical sound that the doctor is producing and because he is now the centre of the attention we know for certain that the power has shifted and he is the person with the most power and status.

Editing

The editing and the way this clip has been put together is very well, this is because the editing team must have been very efficient when putting all the different shots together because in my opinion the clips all fit very well together and in some parts there are actions completed in a variety of different shots and these flow very well. For example at about 0.14 second through the clip, the women is shown to take an object out of her pocket, throw it and the man catches it, this is taken using at least two different shots however the action is clean and it looks as if she has thrown it continuously. The eye lines in this clip also match up very well, for example when she is kneeling down and he is standing on the stairs, she is looking up at him and he is looking down on her. Another example of a continuous action within this clip is when the doctor using his 'power' to knock to sonic screwdriver out of the mans hand, this action is completed using a shot showing it being hit out of his hand and then a following close up shots showing it sliding across the floor. This action looks clean and you can tell its one full movement.

Total Greek Yoghurt Advert evaluation

During this advert regional identity is shown in a variety of different ways, for example, the scene, the music and the actors.
 The scene gives regional identity because throughout the clip the scene is very traditionally greek.

This scene is very traditionally greek, there is the long grass and hills in the background with an old run down building in the foreground, this shows regional identity very well because if someone was to watch this advert without knowing what it is about then they could guess it is Greece because of being very traditional. 

This wide angle from behind the boy is also very traditional for Greece with the bell tower and rolling hills. In this shot you can see that the boy is wearing quite dirty clothes, often associated with rural Greece. From this we can tell that the family in the advert are very pro and from earlier on in the clip we can tell that they live on a farm and this is likely their only source of money. 

The music shows regional identity because it is very obvious that it is Greek music and i think this adds more to the clip because even without seeing the clip you would hear that it is advertising something Greek. 

This shot is a medium shot showing a man in a typical Greek monks outfit. The use of the Greek flag in the background also creates regional identity because you wouldn't find Greek flags anywhere else other than Greece. 

This shot was taken at a high angle, this helps with regional identity because it emphasises that this clip was set up in the hills of Greece. You also very rarely associate long wind

ing paths coming down from the hills from places other than Greece.

In this close-up clip we learn what the advert is about. we know that the advert is advertising the yoghurt because of the yoghurt is in very clear and the image is good quality. 

In this shot we hear the womens accent as she answers the phone. This represents regional identity because this is a very typical Greek accent.
